Quickie Review: Clinique Pop Matte Lip Colour + Primer in Ruby Pop

We haven’t been seeing a lot of bright red lips lately, and I’m sorta missing it. Red brightens up my skin in an instant and makes me feel more capable. It’s just a color, I know, but if anything it still remains as the most visually stimulating of all.

That's why I'm so glad to try out a new red, and it's the gorgeous Clinique Pop Matte Lip Colour + Primer in Ruby Pop (P1,100)! I squeed internally when I received this tube from the Clinique team. I have a thing for pretty lipstick packaging (does it show) so this is right up my alley. The clean cube shape, matte rubber bottom that matches the color inside perfectly, and the classy silver combination is such a treat to behold.

The formula itself is worthy of the beautiful packaging. This matte lipstick is INTENSE. One swipe and you will get the saturation + opacity you see in my FOTD! I'm not kidding. It's the kind of lipstick you have to be careful with since it delivers so much pigmentation in one pass. On top of that, it's so buttery even though it's a matte lipstick. I can't recall a creamier matte lipstick than this.

Is it 100% matte though? I'd say it's more of a velvety matte, with a tiny bit of shine even when it has settled down. I prefer that though, since it keeps the lips from looking too flat. It also has this quality of smoothing out lip lines.

Can I take a moment to say, I did not heavily photoshop my face here. It's this cushion foundation I'm wearing! It just erases my whole skin, lol.

Can I take a moment to say, I did not heavily photoshop my face here. It's this cushion foundation I'm wearing! It just erases my whole skin, lol.

The staying power is pretty good at 4-5 hours of wear, and it's super hydrating - no need for a lip balm if you have normal lips. Eating will fade the color, but a strong, even stain will remain. It doesn't completely dry up which leads us to the single caveat: it transfers like crazy. Touch it, even oh so lightly, and it will come off on your finger or clothes. Anything that goes near it will get it on the surface.

It's not that the lipstick itself comes off - it's just that the pigment content is so high! It's a good thing but it has its trade-offs, as well.

Overall, I find the Clinique Pop Matte Lip Colour + Primer an excellent lipstick. Try it if you're into bold, solid lips that are comfortable to wear! Currently there are eight shades available in the Philippines but they will be completed soon (there are 16 in the line). ^_^ I'm looking forward to checking out the rest!

What do you think? Are you feeling the love for red yet or are you still in the muted color phase?

"Skincaretainment" is a thing, and the Koreans have mastered it

by Claire Reyes, contributor

It wasn’t too long ago when we thought of skin care as a strict regimen featuring tubes and bottles of serious-looking products. They felt very utilitarian and unexciting but you had to apply them daily, without fail, else all hell would break loose. Over the recent years though, we’ve learned that it can actually be a good idea to deviate from routine every so often. We now know that our skin’s needs can change over time, so it’s important to pay attention and switch out products to keep our regimen effective.

What’s more, new beauty regimens like the 10-step Korean skincare routine are just too intriguing not to try. Sure, it seems incredibly daunting but the Koreans have turned a process that we used to follow with military-like precision into a cute, effective, and surprisingly fun experience. A term has even been coined for it: “skincaretainment” is such an apt description to use, as evidenced by our current fascination with all things K-beauty. What’s especially fascinating is that the whole thing is a full production from start to finish, starting with...

The Shopping Experience

Though my husband adores me, it’s only at Etude House that I’ve been greeted with a “Welcome, Princess!” upon entering the store. Everything is cute and pink and girly – even the beauty assistants sport frilly pink aprons! The mood differs from brand to brand: clean, minimalist interiors at The Face Shop, K-idol standees at Nature Republic, purple-themed whimsy at Holika Holika.

Even online shopping is made fun by websites like Althea, with cute, image-heavy product descriptions. I still pick up the wrong product sometimes because the labels can be confusing but for the most part, the graphics are incredibly detailed! And speaking of the products, we often find ourselves unable to resist purchasing an item or two even without first checking for reviews because of...

The Packaging Design

It’s often love at first sight (and smell) when we encounter K-beauty products. Korean brands are masters in the art of making cosmetics look vanity display-worthy, and it adds so much pleasure to actually using them. Case in point: I usually neglect applying moisturizers but when they come in jars that look like cute fruits and animals—well, I use them! They almost always smell so good, too.

Some products literally contain an element of entertainment by featuring K-pop and K-drama idols, which become collectibles for fans and turn many into beauty converts. It feels quite different from the typical celebrity endorsements done by Western brands because Korean idols (including men) are well-known for investing in various beauty routines to maintain their appearance. We haven’t yet seen one that didn’t have that famous Korean glowy complexion so we’re very much inclined to copy whatever they’re doing!

The User Experience

Aside from the attractive packaging, we’re also given the chance to experience something totally new. As a way of highlighting the star ingredient, the “white” and the “yolk” in this Egg Sleeping Pack from AboutFacePH must be mixed together with the included “spoon” prior to application. It’s a simple yet fun additional step to putting on our skincare!

The Elizavecca Carbonated Bubble Clay Mask has been making its rounds on blogs and vlogs alike, including this one by YouTube superstar Tati. The clay mask activates and foams after application, which is both bizarre and fascinating to watch.

Though sheet masks aren’t a new experience, brands are constantly finding ways to make it more interesting. There are animal designs like these ones from Proud Mary and pretty lace prints from Banila Co.  We’ve also seen other designs that contain 24k gold or look like something you’d wear to a fancy masquerade! They aren’t really necessary but they sure make that 10-step regimen a lot less tedious.

The Results

The clincher to all these is: these products actually do the job. Through the hype that surrounds them, Korean skin care typically makes the most of tried-and-tested natural ingredients and constantly pushes the envelope by foraying into strange actives like snail slime and horse fat. At the height of its skincaretaining, we find ourselves part of the narrative as we stay glued to the mirror, almost not believing how good our skin has gotten from using these products.

Fortunately, the price for all this skincaretainment is pretty easy on the pocket, too. Compared to their Western or even Japanese counterparts, K-beauty offers a wide range of affordable products that deliver great results. So while novelty may be what initially draws users in, many do continue to use and explore Korean skin care.

What do you think about products that are designed for skincaretainment? Have you tried using any? Tell us about your favorites!

We wish you a merry MAC-mas!

Slay is the name of the game when it comes to MAC Cosmetics releases. The brand has been hitting us up with even more things this Holiday 2016 (I feel like we’ve been saying this for so long but come on, a new release every week? Wow!) They’ve finally introduced their official holiday collection: Nutcracker Sweet, as inspired by the whimsical tale about a little girl, her doll and their journey through the land of sweets.

Consisting of makeup kits (yes, you read that right, kits), lipsticks, liners, solo eye shadows, highlighters, pigments, powders and palettes, the collection makes sure to give you more bang for your buck! Some of the things we’re most crazy for: the Basic Brush Kit ($53) that includes five travel-size brushes perfect for every look, the Retro Matte Kit in Plum ($45) that includes an Upward Lash mascara, pout-perfect lipsticks in Dancing Flowers (matte) and Oh, Lady (retro matte liquid), and the Eye Compact in Warm ($40), which is basically the only eyeshadow palette we want to be wearing this holiday season.

The packaging has also been dubbed one of MAC’s “most covetable” ones yet, with shades of pink, gold, plum and bronze decked out on each product. The collection officially launches on October 27 on the MAC website and MAC stores, so better mark those calendars! It should arrive in the Philippines around November or early December.

Budget Beauty: Brush and tool cleaners under P500

$
0
0

If there is one important lesson I’ve learned from years of collecting and using makeup, it’s that squeaky clean makeup tools are as important as nailing the application of on-fleek cat eyes. When your brushes are loaded with product from previous uses, it becomes more difficult to buff and blend because of all the caked-up gunk. Foundations get streaky, eyeshadow colors look muddy, liner brushes feel hard and poke-y. Not to mention the fact that you put yourself at risk for catching an infection, a nasty rash, or even a painful pimple!

While it may be tempting to simply use a regular soap or shampoo to wash your tools, remember that those products aren’t designed to clean bristles and sponges. They can’t dissolve the product buildup, especially from water-proof or water-resistant formulas. If you want to keep your tools in good shape and ensure that they’re thoroughly cleaned, it’s a good idea to use cleaning products formulated specifically for this purpose. They don’t have to cost much either - just check out these under P500 brush cleaning must-haves that got us excited to clean up.

Ellana Minerals Cucumber Melon Makeup Brush Cleaner (P400, Landmark and ellana.com.ph)

This fruit-scented brush cleaner has long been a crowd favorite because it smells pleasantly sweet and is so easy to use! Simply spray the product on the bristles of your brushes and give them a good sweep on a clean piece of tissue until all the makeup on your brush gets wiped off. There’s no need to rinse or wait too long for the brush to dry before using it again; it dries fairly quickly. It’s perfect for spot cleaning, very useful if you're a makeup artist with multiple clients to work on. Read our full review here!

Pure Instant Color Cleaner Solo (P275, Suesh.com)

If your brushes are multi-purpose wonders (aka, you use one brush for blush and contour, or a single brush for eyeshadows), this is the brush-cleaning tool to have. Just run your brush against the sponge within to quickly remove pigments from your brushes, and it’s soon ready to take on another color! Super easy, right? It’s also available in Pure Instant Color Cleaner Duo (P305), which has a smaller sponge in the middle that you can use to wet your brushes before running them along the sponge. The best bit? You can remove the sponges, clean them and let them dry, and easily ease them back into the tin.

Nippon Pro Blend Sponge Cleaner (on sale for P180, Nipponesthetic.com)

Getting liquid and cream makeup out of beauty sponges requires patience and hardcore cleaning powers, but this little bottle makes the task so much easier! It dissolves makeup buildup and removes residue from the sponges. To use, simply squeeze a little amount of the cleanser onto the wet sponge, massage lightly to remove the product, and rinse with water. If you’re planning to try this out, you can get a better deal by purchasing the Nippon Pro Blend Sponge Kit (P400, Nippon Esthetic) which comes with two non-latex black beauty sponges (they are amazing, btw!) and a 20mL bottle of the sponge cleaner.

Brush Egg (P120, Suesh)

This handy brush cleaning pad has taken over the market as it gently cleans brush bristles while being pretty easy on the pocket. It’s designed to fit snugly over your fingers and works well for small to medium brushes. I’ve noticed that the material gets a sticky residue after cleaning lip brushes but it comes off with a bit of soap and a good rinse.

Bossy Brush Cleaning Pad (P150, Suesh)

The fatter the brush, the harder it is to clean! It’s a struggle to wash through all the layers of bristles in dense tools like fluffy powder brushes and kabukis. Thankfully, this cleaning pad makes it possible to get all the buildup out. It has a large surface area with different textures that you simply brush against with a soap-soaked brush. The zigzag area of the pad is also perfect for cleaning spoolies as the pattern can get between the small areas. There’s a suction pad at the back of the pad, allowing you to attach it to the sink and making brush cleaning a breeze. Squirt your brush cleaner directly onto the pad, rub the wet brush against the patterns until all the pigments run out then rinse and dry as usual.

Pure Brush Shampoo (P105, Suesh)

If you’re after something that lathers and cleans the heck out of your dirty brushes, this is it. It takes off even the stickiest of creams and the worst of stains, and it’s niftily packaged in a travel-sized bottle with a pump dispenser. It does smell a bit like hotel shampoo on the bottle but the scent doesn’t transfer to the brushes. I use this with brush eggs and pads to make cleaning even easier.

RosenRye Cosmetic Sanitizer 99% Solution (P200~, Rosenrye.com)

It’s still important to keep your tools clean in between washes, so applying a cosmetic sanitizer made from 99% alcohol is a good idea before and after each use. You can even use this to sanitize your makeup (especially if you’ve been sick) without s worrying about it affecting the formula. Make sure to hold the bottle six inches away from the item you’re sanitizing so it gets evenly misted then allow to air dry. I love that it smells clean and lemon-y!

DIY brush cleaners aren’t bad but for more expensive brushes and tools that I consider as investments, it just makes sense to use cleansers that are made for the job to help ensure that they stay in good shape and can be used for longer.

How do you clean your makeup tools? Know of other under P500 picks that we should add to this list?

Fancy but hardworking: The Skincolor de la Mer Line

$

0

La Mer is famous all over the world for the Crème de La Mer and ingenious way of harnessing the natural bounties of the sea in their trademarked Miracle Broth. I am personally a huge fan of the Gel de la Mer, since it's a lighter formula but with the same rejuvenating properties as the original. Along with the Eye Concentrate, it's what convinced me that La Mer is more than just hype!

Now if you're curious about La Mer's makeup too, well, do I have a review for you. Lovers of luxury cosmetics will be pleased to hear that La Mer's Skincolor line is finally here in the Philippines this October. It's more than just makeup - the brand made sure to infuse each product with the Miracle Broth and other active ferments, so you get to take care of your skin while getting the coverage you need. I have a few products from the line. Here's a quick rundown of each!

The Soft Fluid Long Wear Foundation SPF 20 (P6,650 for 30ml) is a heavy coverage liquid foundation with a demi matte finish. It gives skin that incredibly smooth, velvety finish and yes, very little goes a long way! It's richly pigmented and adheres to skin almost invisibly. It feels weightless on my skin as if I'm not wearing anything. Also, it smells like sweet vanilla, so it always uplifts my mood whenever I wear it. I just really sniff my face for as long as the scent lasts (about 30 minutes or so)!

It's a long-wearing foundation, as the name suggests. It stays put for a good 10 hours on my combination skin with barely any fading. No cost was spared in the formula here! It's basically my dream foundation - has loads of coverage while still looking like I didn't erase my face. Of course, it never hurts that the glass packaging is jaw-dropping.

The only problem is that I got the wrong shade. T__T Tan 42 is about two shades too dark on me (I'd say it's NC40-42), so I can only use it only as a contour color by itself. I've found a solution though: I mix it with a bit of the concealer from the same line. It looks great that way, and it's what I did for my FOTD below! I also sometimes mix it with a lighter liquid foundation to better match the color to my skin tone.

I recommend the Soft Fluid Long Wear Foundation SPF 20 to all skin types as it hydrates the skin WHILE providing heavy, long-wearing coverage with a touch of SPF. Not a lot of liquid foundations can do that, hence, the price tag. Well, it is La Mer! There are eight warm shades available locally so you're sure to find your match.

Next up is The Concealer (P4,200 for 5 grams). This has heavy coverage in one swipe, and like the foundation, adheres to the skin flat and feels weightless. It's super easy to blend and is ideal for blemishes! I find it also works great on the under eyes as it doesn't cake. It also stays on my skin well (same as the foundation, 10 hours before fading); I'd say it has water-resistant properties.

This is my current under eye concealer as it's so easy to apply. Just be warned that it has a bit of drag when swiped onto the skin, but it melts with no trouble when blended with fingers or a dense brush.

I didn't think I'd go crazy over The Powder (P5,250 for 8 grams) since it looks like your typical translucent powder, but this blew me away. The powder gives skin this incredible fine sheen while at the same time providing some coverage. It adjusts to the skin, so even though there's only one shade available, it should work for all tones.

I find that this extends my makeup well throughout the day while providing this beautiful skin-like glow. The caveat: there's only eight grams of powder in the jar. I'm surprised because the jar is LARGE but it seems that it's mostly glass. I appreciate how it looks on my dresser, but it takes up more space than I'd like. The puff is also just so-so. I still prefer to use a powder brush.

Formula wise, The Powder is amazing, but the packaging for me could be more efficient.

Last but not least, I've got The Powder Brush (P4,600). It's a synthetic brush which can be used a variety of ways: as a foundation, blush, concealer, and contour buffer. It works with powder, cream, and liquid formulas! The brush is so well-formed that there are no pointy bristles when you press it down. It's also so so soft on skin, as if I'm just using my fingers. It's got this perfect density while still maintaining a bouncy quality to it.

This is an excellent multi-purpose brush, if you don't mind the price tag. It's about the same price level as most luxury brush brands.

Using the La Mer liquid foundation (mixed with the concealer), concealer (under eyes), and powder in this look!

Using the La Mer liquid foundation (mixed with the concealer), concealer (under eyes), and powder in this look!

The verdict? The Skincolor de la Mer line costs a pretty shiny penny, but it means serious business. Each product has amazing pigmentation and finish, along with weightless feel and long wear. Get it if you love luxury beauty - you won't be disappointed.

Skincolor de la Mer is available in Rustan’s Makati, Shangri-la and Cebu

Staff Picks: Our travel must-haves

Are you traveling soon? With fall season underway and long weekends coming up, we at Project Vanity have planned a few trips for some much-deserved R&R. We take beauty seriously so we thought it'd be interesting to pull out travel kits for a little show and tell.

By the way, in case you're still completing your travel essentials, we've curated the Wanderlust Kit (P1,450 and now at free shipping) to include everything you'll need for a trip. Ready to see what's in our own kits? Here goes!

IMG_7404.jpg
IMG_7418.jpg
IMG_7412.jpg

Liz: I'll be traveling a few times before the year ends so I'm already thinking about what I want to bring this time. Last time I was abroad, I took three custom Project Vanity pouches with me: one for retouching on the plane, one for skincare, and of course, another just for makeup. So happy that these pouches are so roomy! They can fit SO many things.

I was all for traveling light before but I just hated having gaps in my routine; it's still better to have exactly what I need on hand instead of improvising. If you're curious to know exactly what's inside those kits, here's the whole story on it haha. It's way too long to write down here!

Tellie: I always end up overpacking anyway, but it usually starts with a "skeleton" kit. I try to bring a "drunk-proof" eyeliner, an eyebrow product, a mascara and a curler, LORAC PRO Palette and eye primer, concealer, color corrector, lipstick, and nice foundation. I have a handy dandy travel brush set which covers all my basics, so I always bring that, too.

Everything here is "negotiable" but the LORAC PRO is always with me, whether at home or during travel. It has so many colors in spite of its compact size, and I will rave about the shades and textural variations to my last breath!

Marielle: I don't have a good grip on the concept of packing light, especially when it comes to my makeup bag. I bring a full bottle of foundation on any trip! And since I choose makeup colors by mood, I feel like I have to have a selection of lipsticks at the very least. I usually pack a neutral shadow palette, a universal blush, highlighter, eyeliner, and all my kilay products. These are things you'd usually find in my daily kikay kit. Then I'll bring one nude lipstick, one evening/dark lipstick, one lip gloss, and one "crazy" lipstick color I'm trying to pull off.

Katsy: My travel makeup kit changes with my current makeup mood more than the weather or the location (though I still try to adapt to where I'm going!) Ideally, I would have a selection of lip products just because. Plus an eye palette which would likely remain unused during the trip, a staple brow product, a go-to blush/bronzer/highlight combo, and a dependable base.

Claire: I always take multipurpose products that I know will survive all weather conditions, and can take my look from casual to formal in a jiffy. I might not end up using all of them during my trip but I love having options! Benefit's The Porefessional makes my pores less obvious. For base, a good BB cushion like Laneige Pore Control is a given as it covers all the bases (pun intended). Versatile palettes like Sephora Collection's Palette to Go in Neutral, Pink Sugar Honey I'm Good Eyebrow Kit, and Essence Shape Your Face Contouring Palette take care of face, cheek and eye color. I like prepping my lips with tinted lip balms like the one from Burt's Bees, and I love having several options for lips and cheeks with Benefit's Benetint and Skinfood Fresh Fruit Lip & Cheek Trio. And of course, a mini mascara like Benefit's Roller Lash! Believe it or not, everything fits into the Girl Boss Glam pouch!

Stacie: Whenever I return to my province (and stay there for at least two weeks), I bring every makeup item from my stash with me, plus basic skincare and a few mask sheets! For shorter trips though, I just bring the basics: a BB cream or cushion (my current love is The Face Shop's CC Cover Cushion), an eyebrow pencil, and a tint. Sometimes I throw in an eyeshadow or mascara, too. I always go for multipurpose, can-be-used-without-tools kind of makeup.

Charlie: I don't really do a lot of traveling but if I did, I'd bring makeup products that aren't bulky but can get the job done. I really like the Quick FX No Shine Mattifier to keep my oiliness at bay. And since I can't be without sunblock, Bath Junkies' Sunblock Gel is my safest bet as it is best for oily skin and it dries easily. For a bit of coverage, I like iWhite's BB Holic and my long-time fave 4u2 Dream Girl BB Powder. I always have a tint with me (KJM Cheek Lip Tint), a lipbalm (ChapIce Mixed Berries), and a brow pen (Nichido ActiBrow). A good long-lasting brown eyeliner like Essence Long Lasting Eyeliner in Hot Chocolate also sometimes finds its way to my kit for times when I feel like putting on a bit of color on my lids.

Crystal: I try to bring as little as possible when traveling. I usually bring a BB cushion like The Face Shop My Other Bag and set it with an oil control powder. I'm currently using Karadium Oil Correct Pact. I find that bringing GWP's like the Clinique palette is really handy because it has blush and eyeshadows already. I bring brow stuff with me that I can apply easily like the Daiso eyebrow pencil and Maybelline browcara. I always bring a lip balm with me like my favorite Fresh, and a lipstick like MAC. And to top it off, I pack a perfume mini like Elizabeth Arden Pretty so I smell good, too!

Karla: I always try to bring as little makeup as possible when traveling, and try to bring palettes so it's easier to pack. My current faves are the bareMinerals Complexion Rescue tint (it already has SPF!) and my NAKED palette for every eye look possible. For cheeks/face contour, I bring the Makeup Forever Pro Sculpting Palette in shade 30 for its amazing bronzer, blush, and highlighter!

I also love bringing more nude/brown lipsticks so this Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick in Androgyny is my favorite for that 90s lip. Maybelline's Lash Sensational is a mascara I am falling in love with- it actually wears just like Benefit's Roller Lash!

Gett: The amount of makeup I bring depends on the trip duration, where I'm going, and what the weather is like in the place I'm going. For weekend trips, I bring the necessities: a base, concealer, eyelash curler, eyebrow stuff, lip & cheek tint, and a couple of lipsticks. If the trip is longer, I also bring my Urban Decay Naked palette and more lipsticks!

My picks include Bourjois 123 Perfect CC Cream, Pink Sugar My Li'l Secret Concealer, Shiseido Eyelash curler, Etude House Auto Eyebrow Pencil, Nichido Brow Mascara, Tony Moly Tony Tint Delight, and lipsticks I'm in the mood for.

Video is the best way to communicate a large amount of information in the shortest amount of time - plus it's just more fun - so I am constantly thinking of videos I can do for the Project Vanity community. I'm still lost though, as I seem to have this mental block when it comes to making them! I mean if I can only magically create two of me, one to just work on this website and another to just brainstorm and shoot videos, I would. But as it is I shoot only what and when I can!

I've been having better success with videos over at our Instagram @projectvanitycom, so I am exploring that platform as well.

If you could give me suggestions about what to do, I'd love to hear them! It's hard for me to copy others, but on the other hand, I also can't quite figure out what I can offer to you guys that you haven't seen or would like to see. What do you think?

In the meantime, here's my latest upload over at the Project Vanity Beauty Channel. I was preparing for an Olay media event later that evening (was shooting it in the afternoon), so I thought'd it'd be nice to show how I would do my face for an evening engagement. I also tried a few new notable products, like the Guerlain Fall Collection and a couple of things from the Victoria Beckham x Estee Lauder line. I also used a MAC Star Trek pigment that is just so beautiful! I hope you enjoy this video, and please please do let me know of any ~constructive~ feedback. Thanks!

Real Talk: Do you honestly need deodorant?

by Claire Reyes, contributor

When I started noticing the changes in my developing adolescent body, I also began to get conscious about my grooming. It was also at this point that I discovered products that I could apply to my underarms to keep me from smelling stinky, so deodorants and antiperspirants became new additions to getting ready for school. By the time I was an adult, applying deodorant had become as automatic as brushing my teeth or washing my face. It was part of my routine and I didn’t feel complete without it! Now that I’ve been paying closer attention to my beauty products though, I began to question if I actually needed it as I’d been taught to think.

What causes body odor?

First off, let's be clear on one thing: sweating is not bad. It’s a normal bodily function that allows your body to cool off and to expel stuff that it doesn’t need. Also, it’s not the sweat itself that causes you to smell but the bacteria that inhabits our skin. They break down the protein found in our sweat and cause that off-putting sour odor.

Genetics can also play a key role. Some people are simply wired to be a little more smelly than others, but I have some good news: as East Asians, we generally have fewer sweat glands compared to other races, so we’re actually less prone to body odor! But that can be negated by the food we eat, which can definitely make us smell funky. Aromatic foods like those containing garlic and spices contain scent compounds that linger in our system long after we've finished eating, and they can cause your natural scent to be more pungent than usual.

What solutions are available?

You probably already have a preferred weapon for fighting off that funk: deodorants work by disabling the odor-causing bacteria while antiperspirants purport to prevent sweating in the first place (this isn’t always true). Many products are a hybrid of the two formulas though, with a bit of fragrance thrown into the mix. These come in so many forms: liquid roll-ons, solid sticks, powders, sprays, and even lotions. The different formulas pretty much all perform the same way so you can just choose one that suits your preference. But if you’re keen on using something that ACTUALLY WORKS, you need to take a closer look at the ingredients list.

Most deodorant-antiperspirant hybrids have some form of aluminum-based compound in their formula. These form a temporary “plug” in your skin, preventing the release of the much-dreaded pit sweat. Aluminum chlorohydrate, one of the most common forms of this sweat-buster, has become controversial over recent years because of claims that it causes breast cancer. The National Cancer Institute has stated that there are not enough studies to back up this claim though. Products that contain this ingredient are best applied on dry skin at night, to give it enough time to absorb into the skin and do its thing.

Locally, tawas is easily available in wet markets in crystal or powder form, and you can even find it in beauty stores. It might be touted as a more natural way to keep stink at bay, but its chemical name is actually aluminum potassium sulfate—making it just another aluminum-based compound that works in exactly the same way as its cousins.

A small amount of emollient (typically oil) is also added to help the product glide across the skin and keep the underarms from drying out. Essential oils like sunflower oil and tea tree oil are popular additions because of their anti-bacterial, anti-darkening, and anti-blemish benefits as well. They also provide a more pleasant scent help pits stay fresher longer, without the potential irritants that synthetic fragrances may cause to sensitive skin.

Do you really need deodorant?

We all have different needs and preferences but now that we know more about what goes into our underarm products, maybe we can make wiser choices: do you really need these products in your routine? Should you switch to organic variants that are aluminum-free? What if you just pat your pits with tissue every time you feel some wetness? These all have to take your preferences and lifestyle into consideration.

For the most part, regular showers and keeping the area clean should keep you smell-free. You can also lightly exfoliate your armpits to remove dead skin. Opt to remove hair (through shaving, waxing, or laser) because it makes for the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive in. To keep odor at bay, it also helps to limit your consumption of spicy and garlicky food!

If the scent doesn't go away even when you've taken the following measures or if you just really don't mind using deodorants everyday, then it should be fine to keep it in your daily routine.

Do you use deos or antiperspirants for your underarms? What other practices do you follow to keep from getting bad body odor?

Swatch o'clock: Our fave P349 liquid lipstick just came out with new shades!

Pink Sugar Cosmetics is on a roll, and they have new fall colors out in stores now! These shades are brown-based and/or in the darker spectrum so they're just begging to be worn this season. I've already reviewed the formula of the popular Lip & Cheek Sugartints (P349) so this is more of a quick swatchfest with color descriptions.

There are five new colors, but I only had four come photography time. I couldn't find Sugar & Spice (described as a grayish taupe brown) because I had my helper re-organize my stash recently and it got lost in the flood of product. Sorry about that! ANYWAY. Here are the shades I have with me!

Purrfect Pout is a pretty pinkish plum that is great for everyday wear. It's an MLBB (a bit brighter than Pink Sugar x Project Vanity's Matte Lip Crayon in Woke Up Like This) that should look great on most skin tones! Crazy In Love is a peachy brown that's nice and warm against my medium skin. Posh Purple is a dark muted plum while Truth Or Dare is an unapologetic deep, almost rusty brown. I wore the latter to an event and three people asked me what it was!

IMG_8040.jpg
IMG_7775 2.jpg

I admit they don't look that much different from each other in the tube (especially when lined up with past Sugartints) but they are worlds apart when worn. I honestly love all the shades although I have to mention that Posh Purple and Truth Or Dare can look patchy, typical for very dark shades, so make sure to apply both on completely dry lips. Try to do only one layer and wait for them to dry completely. Avoid smacking your lips together as this will lift the pigment as the product is drying.

That being said, it's still easy to forget that these Pink Sugar lipsticks are only P349. They wear well during the day and are not as dehydrating as other liquid lipsticks. <3 What's your fave out of the four I've swatched?

Six ways to be a smarter beauty spender

$

by Arian Yupangco, contributor

Whether you’re on a student allowance, bringing home a hefty paycheck, or just have a tiny bit leftover after paying the bills, you gotta be a smart spender when treating yourself to a beauty fix. Even if you have enough of a budget to buy anything you set your heart on, you still want to get the best products that your money can buy. What a waste it would be spend your hard-earned pesos on products that you already have dupes for, fail to impress you, or let you down entirely by causing damage to your skin.

Buying smart doesn’t mean limiting yourself to drugstore products though. You can indulge even on the most expensive skincare and makeup AND still get a good deal for as long as you make sure to follow these tips!

Look it up

With the availability of internet pretty much everywhere we go, you can easily do a quick Google search about the product you’re interested in buying. You wouldn’t buy a new car without finding out more about it, right? Even though they don’t (usually) cost as much as a car, the same care and consideration should be applied to shopping for makeup and skin care since these are products that you put on your body.

Find out how much it costs (especially important if you want to avoid buying fakes), where to purchase, and, most importantly, if it’ll seem like a good fit for you. Read up on what people are saying about it and how it worked (or didn’t work) for them. Websites like Temptalia and Makeup Alley have an extensive directory of comprehensive product reviews as well as real user experiences. If you need feedback on local products or want to know how international hits fare on Pinay skin, then hit up some PH-based websites - we have a vibrant local community here! A little bit of reading can go a long way in saving you from purchases that cause regret.

Don’t be shy, try

I know that asking a crabby-looking sales assistant is a little intimidating sometimes but as a (smart) shopper, don’t let that stop you. It’s your right to be able to swatch or try on the product first before deciding to buy or “bye” it. Ask for testers and follow our tips for a germ-free swatch fest. It’s not a crime, so take your time!

If you’ve struck gold and a brand rep is willing to part with some samples, make sure to put some tact in place and stick to two to three samples at most. You don’t want to be seen as a shameless hoarder and be given the stink eye. Oh, and if you’ve got the time, many brands offer free makeovers. My suggestion? Go for it! It’ll be the ultimate way to test out how they fare on you first before adding them to your beauty bounty.

Expand your horizons

Whether you’re a long-time user of high-end beauty products or have firmly stuck to more affordable, department store options, it’s important to test both waters when looking for a worthwhile. A P200 mascara may be able to perform just as great as that P1,000 one you’ve been eyeing for the last few weeks. On the flip side, a pricey blush you splurged on can give you better value because it lasts all day compared to the ultra cheap one that you have to retouch every few hours.

Some of you may think that high-end makeup and skincare ain’t worth the cash especially if many cheaper options claim to be dupes, but there’s often a good reason why they’re expensive. Luxury items don’t just come in pretty packaging; they tend to perform better and use prime ingredients that are less likely to trigger skin irritations. Not to say that most cheap cosmetics are harmful! I’ve personally tried a whole slew of budget beauty brands and found genuine favorites among them. The key is being willing to find what really works for you regardless of brand biases. Remember: the price tag isn’t always an indicator of performance. Just look at all the cheap but HG-level picks we’ve found so far!

Give a little TLC

Okay, so you have a sizable collection of beauty babies you’re proud of. That’s all well and good but if they’re not getting the care they deserve, you might just end up shelling more money than you’re willing to part with. Got your stash prettily displayed and bathed in sunlight? The heat might melt cream formulas or make photo-sensitive skin care ineffective. Is your vanity overcrowded with too many products? A little bump can send them toppling and crashing onto the floor!

Trust me, even the littlest of precautions can make a big difference. Invest in pieces that allow you to safely (and neatly) store your stash. All this love and care includes throwing away makeup that’s so old you don’t even remember you had it, by the way! If you truly love something, you have to learn to let it go [insert dramatic music here]. You won’t only avoid ruining your skin, but it instantly grants you more space for newer products. Finally, think twice and thrice and four more times before hoarding! Having more products than you can use before they expire is simply money down the drain.

Twin spotting

I don’t know about you but I have, on more than one occasion, excitedly brought home a new blush or lip gloss only to find out I already have one that’s so similar they could practically be twins. There goes my moolah! This is why it’s important to know your beauty collection like the back of your hand. Okay, not really, but being aware of what you have versus what you don’t is more necessary than you think. Invest in acrylic organizers and portable multi-layered drawers. Not only is keeping your products organized a good way to de-clutter and keep your personal space tidy, but it’ll help you clearly see and remember what you already own.

If you find it a tad bit difficult to keep track of all your stuff, well there’s an app for that. In fact, there’s a whole bunch! Apps like My Beauty Cache (iOS), My Makeup Collection (iOS/Android), and Snupps (iOS/Android) help you keep an up-to-date, visual inventory of all your beauty goods. All you have to do is snap a pic, label, and save away so that the next time you plan to haul, just open the app and see what you’ve either already got or have to have. Other nifty apps like Think Dirty (iOS/Android) not only help you sift through products by scanning their barcode, they can also tell you which products have potentially harmful ingredients and help you to make safe product purchases. If you’re more of an “old fashioned gal” and don’t want to rely on an app, there’s always good ol’ spreadsheets where you customize how you organize your collection exactly the way you want it.

No takes on fakes

Buying fake or “replica” makeup should never cross your mind, not even once! Buying that “Singapore authentic” primer you saw on Instagram can be oh-so-tempting because it makes you think it’s going to save you a few bucks. But you know what’s not going to save you money? A trip to the doctor and a week’s worth of pricey antibiotics because of the mysterious ingredients and production methods used by sketchy manufacturers to make that so-called beauty bargain.

Fake makeup is cheap for a reason. No quality testing goes into them and they use inferior, potentially dangerous ingredients. If you want to wise up to the woes of purchasing phonies, just stick to buying from authorized brand distributors and trusted sellers.

How about that? It’s not too complicated to become a smart(-er) spender, right? Whether beauty is your passion, a casual hobby, or a simple necessity, keep these tips in mind the next time you decide to do some beauty shopping. I hope they help you avoid making any regret purchases and get you the best products for your budget. Happy saving (and shopping), ladies!

Here's another affordable micellar water at only P0.90 per ml

When it comes to removing the makeup from our faces, micellar water is probably our top pick at Project Vanity. It’s easy, refreshing and feels soothing on the skin. Thing is, cult fave Bioderma is expensive locally while Bifesta seems to go out of stock pretty quickly. We found a great cheap solution in Maybelline but it looks like it now has some competition! L’Oreal has finally released their own take on micellar water, and we were happy to learn that they offer variants according to skin type.

The L’Oreal Micellar Water 3-in-1 (P225) is one of the most affordable removers in the market right now. At P0.90 per mil, it's about the same price as Maybelline's micellar water, which is P199/200ml or P.99 per mil. L'Oreal's Moisturizing pink variant contains French Rose Extract to nourish dry skin, while the Refreshing blue one has a 95% Pure Water formula to ensure that it doesn’t leave skin with a greasy feeling.

The other amazing thing about this #MicellarMiracle is that both variants can be used on sensitive skin as well. The formulations are proudly alcohol-free, oil-free, fragrance-free, and hypo-allergenic while promising to cleanse, remove makeup, and soothe all at once. This is one multitasking cleanser!

To ensure that I used the right variant, my skin was tested with the High Technology L'Oreal Paris Skin Care Analyzer for its hydration, elasticity, and sebum levels. These will also be available at leading L'Oreal counters so their skincare advisors can give you a quick skin analysis and help you decide on which is best for you. My “results” were then handed in this eye-catching report: I was diagnosed to have oily skin! This came as bit of a shock as I usually have dry skin but the weather has been making it feel a little different. Now I know why!

I’ve used the pink variant a couple of times to remove light makeup, oil, and dirt and it seems to be doing a good cleaning job. Liquid lipsticks come off easily without leaving my skin feeling stripped of moisture after. I’ll definitely be trying the blue variant next to see if my skin has indeed changed.

Compared to the other two micellar waters in my stash (Maybelline and Bioderma Sensibio), the L'Oreal Micellar Water has no discernible scent. I also did a swatch, soak, and swipe test using my dependable waterproof eyeliner and while it wasn't as quick in makeup removal as the more expensive option, I would still get the L'Oreal water because of the price point. We tend to use up micellar waters fast anyway so an affordable quality option is a great deal for us beauty lovers.

L'Oreal's Micellar Water is available in 250ml bottles for only P225. There’s a generous amount of product for a very reasonable price, plus you can choose a formula that addresses your skin’s needs.

How do you take off your makeup? Have you tried micellar water? You should, if you haven't yet! It's a life-changing product, at least for the PV girls!

How I finally solved my liquid foundation problems

I love liquid foundation. It gets me the coverage I need while still maintaining a skin-like finish - something that's not easy to find in other types of formulas. However, I don't use them as often as I want, i.e. every day. I have two main issues: the first is that I don't always have time to fuss with brushes or get my fingers dirty. Application can be messy and tedious! My second issue is that I have fantastic formulas with me, but often in the wrong or just not-quite-right shade. I can mix them manually per use but then again, that's too much work for a normal day.

So yesterday I finally arrived at a solution: why don't I pre-mix them in an empty cushion compact? I know, it's not a particularly bright idea nor is it unique. We've already written about DIY cushions previously but we made that tutorial with the idea of copying how Korean CC (color correcting) compacts apply. This time though, it's purely to tweak the shade of a too-dark foundation I have and adjust its heavy coverage to make it lighter for everyday wear.

Here are a few notes on how to do it!

1. Choose only formulas that will actually combine with each other. Water and oil do not mix, so make sure to mix only water and oil-based foundations. La Mer The Soft Fluid Foundation and the Lancome CCCover are both creamy, oil-based products with the same texture, so I chose them for this project. They combined perfectly!

2. Consider also the coverage of each product. If both are heavy coverage, you might find that your cushion would dry up faster. Add distilled water, serum, or face oil (again depends on the base formula) to liquefy the texture a bit and keep it moist for longer. If the foundations you plan to use have light coverage, there is no need to add emollients. In my case, I combined a heavy coverage foundation with a lighter coverage one, to thin it down a bit.

3. Do you want to lighten or darken the base shade? It helps to determine the correct ratio of the foundations you're going to combine. This will require some trial and error, and I recommend mixing a small amount first to get the right amount. Swatch your test batch on your jawline to see if it matches perfectly then tweak as needed! For this batch, I combined the La Mer and Lancome using a 3:1 ratio. The La Mer is two shades too dark on me, while the Lancome is about three shades lighter (it has less coverage though).

4. Now is the time to make your foundation dream happen. I love the La Mer The Soft Fluid, but the SPF is too low for me and it doesn't offer broad spectrum protection. So, I chose to combine it with an SPF50 PA++++ base! The UV Expert is actually closer to a heavily tinted sunscreen than actual foundation (smells like it too); it was the perfect thing to add. The Soft Fluid has more coverage than I'd need for everyday use so it made sense to thin it down just a bit.

5. Fill up your cushion case about halfway. I actually mixed too little at first so the cushion was barely soaked when I put it in; I had to take it back out (all messy like) and add more product to the pan. About half should be the right amount! Gently massage the cushion to soak it all the way through.

By the way, I used the It's My Cushion Case Set and it's only P250 at Althea  if I remember correctly. Such a great buy! I intend to get maybe three more so I can mix up my other liquid foundies.

Here's what the mixed foundation look like. I want to fall on my knees and cry, guys, the foundation matched so perfectly. It also bears mentioning that if you have too light pre-made cushion compact, you can add a drop of darker liquid foundation to adjust it a bit.

The formula I came up with was so easy to apply with the rubicell sponge! I just have to clean it regularly but it's not a hassle with this technique.

So there you go! Hope you enjoyed my insights. If you've ever been frustrated by bottled liquid foundation, well, it's time to cushion up. ;) What do you think, will you be trying this out too?

In Photos: The Miss Universe does a tutorial on how to do pageant makeup

Pia Alonzo-Wurtzbach is our favorite Miss Universe, but it's not just because she won in our lifetime and made all Filipinos proud. Her beauty and grace are, frankly, just the the cream on top of her intelligence, sense of humor, and empowering attitude. We love her story of trying for the Miss U crown several times; she's obviously a hard worker who has studied her trade. She inspires us everyday and we're always waiting to see what she's up to next!

Some of you may know that Pia actually did her own makeup the night she won her crown. She also usually does her own face even for more casual functions, and she even previously shared a video on her everyday makeup look! Earlier this week, she came out with a new video on how she puts on her pageant makeup. Okay, so we’ll probably never get to sashay in a pageant but we do face the same harsh lighting and camera flashes in special events. Want to follow along? We have the step-by-step tutorial from none other than the most beautiful woman in the universe herself!

Pia sets up the base for longer lasting makeup with MAC Prep + Prime Natural Radiance. She uses her fingers to apply it all over her face.

She proceeds to apply the Diorskin Forever Flawless Perfection Fusion Wear Makeup using two different foundation brushes: a rounded one for tight areas like under the eyes and around the nose, and a flat brush to fill in the rest of her face. Here's a beauty queen pro tip: for stage makeup, go for a foundation that’s one shade darker to prevent the spotlights from making skin look washed out.

Using the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder, she bakes her undereye area. It wasn’t shown in the video but maybe she applied her concealer beforehand? If you have dark circles, apply your concealer first then follow these steps so your bags stays hidden.

While giving her loose powder ample time to set, she reaches for her MAC Brow Pencils in Spiked (darkest shade), Lingering (medium), and Fling (light). We’re big believers in brow contouring over at PV and her technique is pretty similar. The darkest shade is used to map the bottom and outermost parts of the brows (the tail), where you usually need the most definition. The medium shade is used to outline the top of the brow, and finally, the lightest shade fills in the rest of the brow. This is how you get 3D brows that never looks flat on camera!

With a fluffy blending brush, she softens the edges towards the nose to make the brows look more natural and to produce a contoured effect.

Instead of immediately reaching for a pretty palette, the crafty Miss U grabs a multi-color face powder to do her eye makeup! She uses two colors from the limited edition MAC for Beth Ditto Powder to the People (no longer available): a light brown shade to fill her entire lid and the inner third of her lower lashline, and a dark brown one to contour her socket line and the rest of her lower lashline.

For extra definition, she takes the Laura Mercier Eye Art Artist’s Palette and uses Truffle (a matte medium brown) to deepen the socket line contour and Violet Ink (matte purple) on the place where the socket line meets the outer corner of the eye. She uses same colors to go over her lower lashline again.

We're surprised to discover that Pia never uses black eyeshadow - she says she goes for browns and violets for her smoky eyes, but never straight up black. To get intensity, she just adds more of the color! This is interesting because now that she mentions it, black is too harsh in person and even often in camera. It doesn't register well. Pia says she also goes for warm shades, which we totally agree with as warm eyeshadow looks fantastic on Filipina skin.

If your powder products are prone to a bit of fallout, the loose powder used for baking will help you keep the area clean. Afterwards, just dust it off with a clean fluffy brush or fan brush.

To line her peepers, Pia starts with a waterproof pencil liner to do some waterlining then creates a more intense stroke with a felt-tip liquid liner to tightline. She applies both as thinly and as close to her lashes as possible. Bonus: the pencil makes it easier for you to trace over with the liquid liner!

In preparation for a lash-stravaganza, lashes are curled and a coat of MAC Haute & Naughty Lash is applied at both the top and bottom lashes. With tweezers, Pia carefully applies false lashes as close to the lashline as possible. Beauty queen pro tip: opt to stack two or more thin falsies on top of each other rather than using thick falsies that look obviously plastic. Also, make sure that they won’t fall off even if you end up crying!

Remember: like products layer better when used together! To prep for powder contour, Pia gives her base another once over with a few light swipes of Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Foundation Powder using a fluffy brush.

Instead of a contour powder, she applies MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation slightly above her cheekbones to bring out the angles of her face. A little bit is also applied to her forehead and jawline.

Then it’s time to warm the cheeks with some MAC Powder Blush in Harmony! She applies it right above the contour. Beauty queen pro tip: stick to applying blush to the cheekbones (near the hairline) for a flush that looks flattering even under bright lights and in photos.

Even heavy makeup can look fresh and glowing, with a bit of help from a favorite highlighter! With her fingers, Pia pats on the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Liquid in Opal on her T-zone and top of the cheek bones. She also uses a shimmer eye pencil to highlight the inner corners of the eyes.

Queens need lip colors that won’t fail their mega-watt smiles, so Pia prolongs her lip color by first lining and filling her lips with the MAC Lip Pencil in Soar. For that extra sparkle, she tops her lip with the Dior Addict Ultra Gloss in 686 Fancy, which she calls a “Miss Universe Pink”.

Now let your hair down and put on your crown!

This is why women are soaking their fully made-up face in a bowl of water

At Project Vanity, we’re always on the lookout for and excited to try new makeup techniques so when we spotted this Korean makeup setting trend which originated from Japan, we just had to give it a go! Jamsu makeup or “diving” technique is somewhat similar to baking in that it utilizes (a whole lot of) powder to create a long-lasting smooth matte finish. It's called diving because to get that finish, you literally have to submerge your fully made-up face into a bowl of water! Sounds crazy? Absolutely. Does it actually work? Let’s see!

What you’ll need:

  • Base makeup of your choice
  • Loose setting powder or baby powder
  • A large bowl filled with cold water
  • Clean towel

Step 1: Apply your base makeup

I used the Happy Skin Don’t Get Mad Get Even Hydrating Liquid Foundation and went over some areas with the MAC Studio Fix Concealer and Laura Mercier Concealer. I’ve read that some people experienced having their face look whiter than usual after diving so I decided to avoid any brightening products except to counteract the darkness in my under eye area.

Step 2: Pile on the powder

Any loose powder can actually work here so I decided to try the cheapest option available: baby powder! If you want a more natural-looking finish though, grab a cheap, translucent setting powder so it doesn’t create a white cast. Coat your entire face, adding a little extra powder on areas where you get especially oily.

Step 3: Dive in!

Fill a large bowl that can comfortably fit your face with cold water. How long you should stay submerged depends on your skin type - 30 seconds is the usual recommendation but if you’re dry-skinned, don’t stay any longer than 15 seconds. Don’t forget to pull your hair back!

Step 4: Gently pat dry.

Right after diving, carefully pat away the water with a clean towel. Do it lightly so as not to remove too much of the powder or disturb your makeup.

Before and after diving

Before and after diving

Step 5: Marvel at the results!

As I toweled off, I noticed a difference in my skin’s texture. It felt smoother but with a slight powdery finish. My face base stayed intact but now had a completely matte finish that didn’t look cakey or heavily powdered, for the most part. I had some dry patches where the powder clung to my skin a bit too much and looks uneven. I opted to simply proceed with the next step and figured it would even out when the base has had time to settle with my skin’s natural oils.

Step 6: Finish your makeup look.

I went on with my normal makeup routine for the brows and eyes, then applied some cheek and lip color. To really test the claims that the diving technique was enough to lock everything into place for the long haul, I didn’t add any more powder afterward or retouch my makeup for the rest of the day.

After seven hours of wear

After seven hours of wear

The Verdict:

After seven hours of wear and zero touch-ups, I can now say that this crazy technique really works! I didn’t even feel the need to retouch my base, though I had finally started to get a little oily in the T-zone area. It’s honestly not such a great idea if you have dry skin, though. By the seventh hour of wear, my concealer had caked up and my laugh lines became more visible. For the most part, the finish looked and felt great but my dry areas seemed parched. If you have dry skin, make sure to moisturize really well (and allow it to be fully absorbed by your skin) before trying this technique and maybe cut diving time to 10 seconds instead.

What do you think of this unique makeup setting technique? Would you consider trying it out?

The formulations themselves are supposedly crease-free and easy to blend, which definitely make it easier to create that discreet slimming contour to put a stop to unsolicited “tumaba ka” comments.

When it comes to hyping up product launches, no one does it better than 19-year-old Kylie Jenner. With the huge success of her eponymous makeup line, it’s no surprise that each new release has all staring at our device screens. Apparently, she’s been working on a new KyShadow Palette called Burgundy, which is the perfect mix of reds, browns and golds!

A video posted by Kylie Cosmetics (@kyliecosmetics) on

Available in both shimmery and matte finishes, the shades include Naked (light champagne), New York (metallic auburn), Brick (brownish red), Burgundy (matte wine), Dubai (metallic burgundy), Beach (golden brown), Penny (satin copper), Almond (chocolate brown), and LA (metallic copper). The nine shadow palette has just dropped on the Kylie Cosmetics site and we imagine they’d work so well with the fall lippies that we’ve been trying to resist. Is this a sign that we should hit the checkout button?

10 Filipino skincare brands that have proven themselves through the years

The local industry has come a long way in creating products that are globally competitive and just as effective (or even better) as international brands. Pinoy pride aside, this is truly something to celebrate and appreciate because many of them are specifically made with the needs of Filipinos in mind. Some brands also make sure to utilize ingredients that are locally produced, such as virgin coconut oil and bee products. Now if you’re looking to add locally-made skin care to your beauty routine on top of our homegrown makeup, make sure to check out these brands!

Silka / 15 years in the business

Did you know that Silka has been around for 15 years? They just recently celebrated their anniversary, and had a lot to thank for for being one of the strongest skincare brands in the Philippines for so long. They're best known for their Papaya Soaps as they were the first to come out with this lightening ingredient locally. Today, the brand has a full skincare line that's effective yet accessible to Filipinas who are on a tight budget.

Human Nature / Eight years in the business

Started as a social enterprise by Gawad Kalinga volunteers, the 8-year-old brand produces all-natural products that are also environmentally-friendly. While their best-selling Sunflower Oil remains a cult favorite because of its many applications, they have a new and improved version called the Sunflower Beauty Oil LUXE which can supposedly rival the benefits of argan oil at a more affordable price. If you’re looking to rebalance your skin and improve its elasticity, you can mix a few drops of Pure Rosehip Oil into your moisturizer or apply it directly for maximum effect.

Human Nature is available at select groceries, beauty sections and online.

Kojie San / Nine years in the business

Whether or not you’re into whitening, getting rid of dark spots is a universal concern. Our editor Liz swears by Kojie San's bestselling Skin Lightening Soap and Body Lightening Lotion for lightening the color of her knees and keeping her skin from having unsightly tan marks. Even the PV men are big believers and avid fans of the Kojic acid’s magic powers!

Kojie San is available in leading supermarkets and drugstores.

Céleteque / 10 years in the business

Because of the French-sounding name, it can be easy to forget that this dermo-skincare brand is proudly Filipino-made and has been providing us with skin health solutions for the last 10 years. Céleteque makes six skin care lines to address every skin condition at an affordable price range. We made sure to include the Hydration Facial Moisturizer in our budget skin care routine for oily and combination skin because the lightweight consistency, while the Brightening Facial Wash simply works well without breaking the bank. Also, check out the Sun Care Face and Body Sun Defense Cream with SPF50!

Céleteque is available in leading supermarkets and drugstores.

Zenutrients / Seven years

Borne out of a need to find a natural treatment for psoriasis, the brand found its solution in virgin coconut oil (VCO). Many of their products feature this as the star ingredient for skin care, face care, and body care. For a great all-around product you can use to nourish dry spots, check out the Argan Skin Salve-ation. And if you’re feeling achy but don’t have the time for a massage, their All is Well Salve provides a quick, soothing pick-me-up.

Zenutrients has stalls in select malls and is available online.

Belo Essentials / Nine years in the business

Dr. Vicki Belo may have made a name for herself as the go-to cosmetic surgeon for celebrities but as a dermatologist, her clinics are also known for their skin care treatments. The release of her own Belo Essentials line has given many the chance to experience “Gandang Belo” without breaking the bank! The brand has a great range of high SPF sun care, and we especially like the Belo SunExpert Transparent Mist SPF 50 with its facial mist-like formula. For a BB cream that also offers sun protection, try the Belo Intensive Whitening BB Cream SPF 50 with kojic acid and tranexamic acid. We’ve also seen quite a few reviews for Belo AcnePro Pimple Gel as an effective overnight pimple treatment.

Belo Essentials is available in leading supermarkets and drugstores.

VMV Hypoallergenics / 37 years in the business

One of the very first brands that developed a comprehensive hypoallergenic rating system was actually from our own backyard. VMV's products are clinically formulated to be free from most, if not all, allergens that are found in a lot of cosmetics so it’s one of the safest local bets for sensitive skin. The Armada Face Cover 30 has been raved about in international magazines and counts Hollywood celebrities like Jennifer Garner among its fans. Bordering on makeup but still chock-full of stuff that’s good for your skin, the Skintangible SPF30 is a great tinted moisturizer that works even for dry-skinned girls while the Fine Finish Pore Minimizing Skin Mattifier is an oil-control toner.

VMV Hypoallergenics has standalone boutiques but you can also purchase them online from here and here.

Snoe Beauty / Six years in the business

You probably never thought you needed products like the Stink Positive Instant Shower Spray or a slimming contour powder like Slim Shade Me Face Sculpting Cake until Snoe made them. The brand focuses on creating effective products that improve your daily routine, and they give the wittiest and cheekiest names to their products! Try the Awesome Poresome Excavator Mask to take the gunk out of your pores and keep your kisser soft and moisturized with their Beso Balm.

Snoe Beauty is available in select malls.

Ilog ni Maria / 22 years in the business

Even before bee-inspired ingredients started a buzz in Korean skin care, a honeybee farm in Cavite was already producing all-natural products with ingredients like bee propolis. Honey is a popular skincare ingredient because of its natural antibacterial and moisturizing properties, so products like the Royal Jelly Cleanser & Moisturizer work well to rejuvenate skin while doubling as a makeup remover. They also have the delicious-sounding Honey Face Scrub, which uses oatmeal to gently slough off dead skin and dislodge blackheads.

Ilog ni Maria’s main store is in their Cavite bee farm but you can also order online.

Oryspa / Six years in the business

The Japanese aren’t the only ones to discover the skin care benefits of rice. Rice bran, the hard brown shell that covers the rice grain, is also apparently rich in vitamin E and vitamin A! It has natural anti-oxidant and anti-aging properties. The Rice Bran Beauty Oil can be used as both a makeup remover and anti-aging product, and instead of washing with rice water, you can use a cleanser like the Rice Bran Face & Body Wash. For the face-mask crazy, they have a Rice Powder Face Mask to clarify and brighten the complexion.

Oryspa can be found in Echo Stores or purchased online.

How eight women survived breast cancer

Earlier this year, I went for an annual physical exam that included a breast ultrasound procedure. The doctors found a mysterious mass on my right breast, and before I knew it, I found myself scheduling breast surgery. The whole ordeal scared the shit out of me but I was glad that I knew rather than being ignorant of what was happening in my body.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and as part of Project Vanity’s mission to empower women, we’d like to encourage you to get yourself checked. It’s scary but necessary, and it can literally save your life. The certainty of knowing the status of your health can only ever be helpful, even when the results are far from ideal. I talked to eight women who received what many would consider as bad news, but there are no sob stories here. I hope that they inspire you to stay positive even when it’s difficult and empower you to take control of your health.

SMV, dancer

I was 19 years old when I first felt a lump in one of my breasts. I waited over a few monthly periods to see if it would go away but when it didn't, I had it tested and eventually surgically removed. The mass was found to be benign but four years later, I developed an itchy rash near the scar area. After various tests and repeatedly going to the doctor because I wasn’t satisfied with the results, a surgical biopsy was finally done on the skin lesion and on the tissue underneath. At age 24, I was diagnosed with stage 0 breast cancer and Paget's Disease. For a brief moment, I felt a sense of comfort from finally knowing what I was up against but the word "carcinoma" pulled me to a state of numbness and despair.

The recommendation for mastectomy (removal of the entire breast tissue) seemed extreme so I sought up to four different opinions while doing extensive research on alternative and complementary treatments. In the end, I still had to undergo a mastectomy but I felt at peace because I knew that I had done all that I could (contacting clinics and treatment programs, getting various tests, making healthier lifestyle choices and trying naturopathic medicine) to make the best decision for me.

The mastectomy was completed but because of some complications, I haven’t yet been able to push through with reconstructive surgery and it has made me feel very self-conscious about my appearance. I avoid unpadded and unlined bras to hide my somewhat uneven size and shape, and usually wear printed shirts or thick layers that do not show any sign of unevenness. I also try to avoid changing in ladies' locker rooms unless I'm alone. I’ve thought about getting a permanent tattoo to conceal the scar but realized that I may still need more surgeries in the future.

Cancer can be very unpredictable so it's best to educate yourself about the disease, available treatments, and other factors that can affect the course of the disease and long-term health. Our efforts may not always give us our desired outcomes, but knowing that we do our best to take care of ourselves can give us some peace of mind.

Irene Pajarillo-Reyes, employee

Since my teens, I have had benign cysts removed from both breasts so I was surprised when a small lump began to hurt. The pain was so excruciating, not even a shot of morphine could ease my suffering. I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer and started getting chemotherapy even before the mastectomy. I did another four cycles after the surgery and had a series of 12 radiotherapy sessions.

What makes having cancer doubly hard is coping with the side effects of the treatments. Constant vomiting, dizziness, loss of appetite, weakness, head to toe pain, and a weakened immune system all became part of my daily reality. Since most of my hair had fallen out, I had my head shaved and it was then that I realized that cancer can be harder on women. No one asks you why you’re bald if you’re a man, but it makes heads turn and stare when you’re a woman. So I would remind myself that being sick didn’t lessen who I am as a person but gave me opportunities to become better. I also thought my baldness allowed me to have fun and wear wigs that are blond or bright red - colors that I wouldn’t have dared to dye my hair! I felt more conscious about how I looked after the mastectomy because having an odd-shaped top means not being able to wear shirts that are fitted.

It became easier to deal with cancer when I learned to accept my condition and realized that I had to muster the courage and the conviction to trust God no matter what. It’s important to not feel defeated and to just take life one day at a time. Without my family and friends, going through life facing a challenge like cancer would be too tough to handle so I feel doubly blessed knowing I had them and a God who loved me.

Michelina Imson-Cadhit, head of customer service at The Medical City

I was 41 years old when I got diagnosed. I had my breast ultrasound and mammogram only upon prescription of the company doctor who conducted my routine annual physical exam. It was a shock because I never felt any pain or discomfort in my breast! I had a skin-sparing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction (my own belly fat was used as filler), 8 cycles of chemotherapy, 28 sessions of radiation therapy, and 6 routine injections of stem cell therapy. I still continue to take oral medication to suppress hormone and estrogen production.

While I felt devastated upon the news of diagnosis, I only felt sad for a short period of time. It’s not easy but being able to accept my reality quickly was very important. I needed to make medical decisions fast because I didn’t want to waste time for intervention. Even though I experienced joint and muscle pain and metallic aftertaste after chemotherapy, and skin burn due to the radiation therapy (because I did not follow the skin regimen prescribed), I feel that I coped really well with my treatment journey.

I am naturally conscious of how I present myself, and used my condition as an opportunity to look good in new ways. When I lost my hair, I bought bandanas and hats to match my outfits and got an eyebrow stencil, which worked like magic! My red matte lipstick became my best friend, and I used a matching polish to cover up my gray-looking nails. People who didn’t know what I was going through actually thought that I was just making a fashion statement.

I'm still in the five-year post-treatment monitoring so I'm officially still battling it. Cancer will definitely change one's outlook in life and many would say that as cancer patients, we should always be positive. For me, it's not just being positive about yourself that's important but also how positive you are towards others. My family was a big inspiration for me: because of them, I tried my best to not look and feel sick. I believed that if I looked and acted normal during my treatment, that's how the people around me would also feel about me. I didn’t want them to feel sad or to worry. So I continued to work, do errands, stay active, and even go to the nail salon as I normally would have. It helped my family to more easily accept my circumstances and to cope with my treatment journey.

My only regret is that I didn’t follow the doctor's advice on skin care during radiation therapy. I didn't use the skin moisturizers prescribed to me, and I got very painful burns and blisters as a result. I hope that other patients will take heed and make sure to follow the right precautions even if they don’t feel like they need it.

Lea Santos, executive director at Guam Commission for Educator Certification

I was 60 years old and getting a mammogram as part of my annual physical when a mass was detected on my right breast. It was found to be stage 0 cancer so I had a lumpectomy and 33 sessions of radiation therapy.

I never felt sorry for myself nor did I cry when I found out that I had cancer. As soon as I was diagnosed, I immediately had a lumpectomy, recuperated, and started radiation treatments after. Since both of my parents had cancer (my mother had leukemia while my father had cancer of the voice box), I had always assumed that our family had a predisposition to the disease and that the odds were quite high that I too would have cancer. When both of my parents had cancer treatments, I was the official family caregiver, nurse, driver, cook, laundry woman, accountant and general slave. That experience gave me a very nonchalant attitude towards the disease. So during the treatments, I tried to live a normal life. I drove myself to and from the hospital for my lumpectomy and radiation treatments. I was exhausted after the radiation sessions so I rested at home and only occasionally went out with family and friends. One of the side effects of the radiation was a sensation of heat inside my breast so I would apply an ice pack to cool it down. I have accepted the fact that my breasts are different sizes and refuse to buy a prosthesis. I have been using a sports bra since the lumpectomy.

If you have cancer and no medical insurance, be sure to look at your financial resources. Find out if you can afford the treatments so you can plan your next steps. Be realistic and weigh your options. You have to make plans for the future, especially if you have a family. Try to foresee what your limits are. Cancer is like any other disease. Keep a positive attitude and live each day like it is the last so you have no regrets. Follow your doctors, take the treatments and medications, and be sure to remain vigilant. Seek solace in prayers.

Susie Macapagal, retired college assistant professor

I had been undergoing yearly mammograms since 1990 and in 2006, the results showed something suspicious. A biopsy confirmed the malignancy and I underwent modified radical mastectomy. I also had to take Tamoxifen (oral medications) for five years but I was very relieved when both my oncologist and surgical oncologist told me that I didn’t need to undergo chemotherapy. After my operation, I coped by trying to see the positive side: that the cancer was caught early and that I didn’t need chemotherapy. I had a supportive family and friends plus I found a support group who not only could sympathize but also understand what I was going through. Most of all, I had and still have Mama Mary. I put my trust in her. She's my rock.

Losing a part of your body is a big physical, mental, and emotional trauma. It made me feel lopsided and less of a woman. But you teach yourself to deal with it and believe that cancer should not make you less of a person. In fact, it should make you a better person for it makes you see things differently and remind you to NOT take things for granted.

Catching cancer at an early stage is the best way of beating it so please get yourself checked every year. If you have been diagnosed with cancer, believe that you can beat it. Be the co-pilot of your doctors in the management of your therapy as this will make you feel less helpless and more in charge of your situation.  Join a support group because you need people who can empathize, understand, and support you. And prayers are medicine for the mind and the soul.

Rebecca Dizon-Fuentes, founding member of ICanServe Foundation

I was 45 when I felt a lump in my right breast. Based on the mammogram, the oncologist said it was benign but a biopsy revealed that it was Ductal Carcinoma In Situ. I had a lumpectomy, 12 sessions of chemotherapy and 36 sessions of radiation therapy.

I lost weight and fell into a depression. My husband was also a commercial pilot at the time so I was constantly worried about him coming home safe. Because I was depressed, I didn’t care very much about my appearance. Luckily, my hair didn’t fall out!

I’ve come to realize that cancer is a journey that I had to take to lead me into the road to wellness and wholeness. My family’s support played a big role in my road to recovery, and my faith saw me through. I can say with all my heart that I thank God for cancer because it has changes in my life beyond imaginings.

Nikoy De Guzman, vice president and head for collaboration of ICanServe Foundation

My first diagnosis was 13 years ago on the left breast, and after 12 years I had another on the right breast. I had radical mastectomy for both stage 1 cancers, and experienced both chemotherapy treatments. Admittedly the second one came as a shock because I was already very aware about breast cancer and had made the effort to lead a healthier lifestyle. I was eating organic food and had trained to become a Bikram yoga teacher. What helped me to accept it was knowing that I’m a third generation breast cancer patient in my family, and by the second diagnosis, I already had ICanServe as a support group.

It’s very comforting to be part of ICanServe because it’s easier to be candid about my experiences with fellow survivors. And as much as they have helped me with my recovery, I also have opportunities to give back by sharing information, raising funds, and doing collaborations. It makes me feel good to be able to help others, especially women who have just received their diagnoses.

There is something about cancer medicine that causes bloat, so it became depressing that I continued to gain weight even when I wasn’t eating. It also makes us ugly. I lost my waist-length hair but I refused to allow cancer to make me ugly. I studied makeup to learn how to cover up my gray, sickly complexion, collected hair pieces, and started wearing lots of accessories. I also wore a lot of moisturizer and religiously applied lip balm because the treatments would even dehydrate the skin. As I tell my fellow survivors, it’s better to wear bright makeup to liven up the complexion because the usual no-makeup makeup look still makes us look pale. Our nails also turn gray so applying nail polish is a must! You really just have to make the most of your situation.

Positivity is key for me. Even if you get the full suite of treatments, they’re not going to work if you don’t maintain a positive attitude. You need to have a fighting spirit to survive all the physical, emotional and mental challenges. Lastly, having cancer was a wake up call for me to live life to its fullest. I realized that life is too short to have “what ifs” and to care too much about what other people think.

Kara Magsanoc-Alikpala, broadcast journalist and founder and president of ICanServe Foundation

I got sick 19 years ago. I felt a growing lump on my left breast but my doctor said it was nothing to worry about. It continued to grow and so my surgeon-father decided to intervene and asked the doctor to do a mammogram and then a biopsy. It was confirmed to be stage 2B cancer so I had a lumpectomy, radiation treatments, and chemotherapy. My dad and two brothers who are all doctors were dismayed by the misdiagnoses so we went to the US for further treatments. It was there that I experienced having doctors who allowed me to be more involved in developing my treatment plan, which was not common practice at the time. I worked on becoming a more informed patient and learning more about my condition. Because of my background as a journalist, I took what I learned, mapped the network of the different local cancer support groups, and made it into a resource book for fellow breast cancer patients.

I found three friends who also wanted to give back so we put up the ICanServe foundation. We decided to focus on creating high-impact campaigns for early detection. There weren’t any formal structures for this so we decided to do it ourselves. We established the “Ating Dibdibin” program where we partner with local governments to create barangay-based early detection programs. To make it a long-term project, we pushed to have the cities make them into ordinances.

In a way, my misdiagnoses were a blessing because they inspired me to push for women to be more proactive about their health. The biggest hurdle for me was being told that I couldn’t have children after undergoing chemotherapy. I was engaged at the time so it was particularly crushing but my aunt told me, “What do they know? They’re just doctors. Just pray and leave it to God.” So I did and I had my miracle daughter!

I don’t wish it on anyone but many things in people’s lives get better with cancer. Being sick doesn’t make you a sob story. Cancer is just like any other crisis, and it can change your life for the better. It reminded me that life is just about love and service, and that you should live each day as if it were your last. There’s always a different vibe when you’re among fellow cancer survivors: the mood is always about being grateful and focusing on the positive because time is too precious to waste on negative things. I think the fear isn’t about getting cancer and dying, but living a life that is without purpose. In my case, my experience of cancer is what helped me find meaning.

Convinced to get yourself tested yet? Doing a self-exam is helpful but for cases like mine, sometimes the lumps are wedged deep into your breast tissue that you won’t be able to feel it. Talk to your doctor about getting a mammogram (usually for women 40 and above) or a breast ultrasound (for younger women). If you don’t have a doctor or have limited means, you can check the ICanServe website for a list of resources.

After I made the decision to have the mass surgically removed for biopsy, I honestly decided to just stop worrying. I figured that it wouldn’t make a difference to my results anyway, so I focused more on making sure that my work wouldn’t be affected and that I would be okay to be on my own after the surgery. Fortunately, the mass was benign and I just need to make sure that I have myself checked regularly. I may not have battled cancer but I feel a sense of pride when I see my scar because it symbolizes that I took control of my health. If you haven’t yet, I hope you do soon.

Staff Picks: This month’s biggest beauty splurge

$

I’ll let you in on a secret: I’ve never spent more than a thousand bucks for any of my beauty products! I don’t really find the need to use using high-end makeup yet, so I haven’t purchased any. I prefer to look for really good deals but I think that you should definitely go ahead and splurge if you can afford it and find that the product will be worth it!

We all have a ceiling for how much we’re willing to spend to cosmetics, and from our survey, we’ve noticed that readers are generally more willing to spend on skincare than makeup. Out of curiosity, we thought to check with the PV team about the most expensive beauty-related items they bought this October and here’s what we found!

Stacie:  I’ve only splurged on one beauty item this month and it is the Wild Peach Cosmetics Large Customizable Palette. Many of my eyeshadows and blushes have broken containers, making it difficult for me to use them in my daily makeup routine because I don’t have the time to fuss with unhinged compacts or cracked palettes. Now that I’ve depotted the products and placed them in this huge empty palette, I’ve been using them more frequently!

Kim: After a ton of pro-and-con sessions with my favorite enablers, I finally decided to get a brush upgrade! This month I got my hands on a few Wet n Wild vegan brushes, the Real Techniques Core Collection Set, Blush Brush, and Miracle Complexion Sponge, and the fairest of them all - the Zoeva Rose Golden Complete Eye Set. They cost me a pretty penny but looking at these tools of makeup magic bring me so much joy.

Crystal: My face is an oily mess, so I'm always on the lookout for long-wearing foundations. Kat von D Lock-It Foundation keeps receiving a lot of raves, so I'm very happy to finally get my hands on one especially since it's not available locally.

Jennifer: My skin has been in quite a funk lately; I'm guessing I may need to up my cleansing game. I do double cleanse but I felt that my skin could use a boost with a face brush. The popular Clarisonic face brush worked wonderfully for me but mine has sadly retired. With a smaller budget this month, I picked up the Miniso Sonic Facial Cleansing Brush. I’m crossing my fingers that it will work just as well for me!

Claire: I'd been eyeing palettes from TheBalm for quite a while. I nabbed the Balm Voyage Vol. 2 on Sephora.ph during the recent site-wide sale because it was 20% off! I love that I can just grab this and go if I forget to fix my makeup bag. Just looking at it gives me wanderlust and reminds me of happy journeys.

The other PV girls are currently on self-imposed shopping bans though because they’re saving up for the special holiday releases! What about you, did you do any beauty hauls this month or are you waiting for the holiday collections as well?

We've got mixed feelings about this P238 eyebrow pen

Long-time readers of Project Vanity may know that I don't like doing outright negative reviews. I personally prefer not to waste time suffering through bad products just so I can waste even more time doing an elaborate, painstakingly-produced takedown of the thing. I know some content producers do that and I am aware that people enjoy reading/watching such, but I just can't get my heart into it. I want this website to remain as THE place to go to if you're looking for something good to try.

That being said, I thought long and hard about whether I should publish my review of the Nichido Acti Brow 24HR Eyebrow Marker (P238). I bought this a couple of months back because I saw some people rave about it, and I was mighty curious how the three-pronged tip would work. I got two shades to be sure, Honey Blonde, the lightest, and Auburn Brown, which seemed like a nice mid-toned warm brown. Both looked great when swatched.

The first time I wore Honey Blonde I was running late for an important meeting. Tough luck for me though because as soon as I put it on, I had to erase it with makeup remover immediately. It was ridiculously carrot red and my brows looked like something a cartoon character would be proud of! It was so so difficult to remove too.

It's a shame because the tip was actually pretty easy to work with, once I got the hang of it. It drew nice hair-like strokes and cut my filling-in time in half. The formula is also quite good - it was wetter than I'm used to, but it applied smoothly and evenly. Once set, IT DOESN'T MOVE. I wore this later on when I was just out to play tennis and it just stayed on like cement. It even set my brow hairs in place and thickened them as if I used a browcara.

Honey Blonde and Auburn Brown looks different when swatched, but on the brows they're *almost* the same. Auburn Brown is a tad less red but it's too minor to count. I can wear this pen with some modifications. Honey Blonde looks okay when set with a light brow powder; it holds down the product like you wouldn't believe.

Honestly, I'd totally hoard this if Nichido made a clear pen just for priming or setting the brows. I love the formula but the colors are just, wtf. If you have fiery red hair these shades should work for you. Otherwise you can tweak the color as I did in the photo above. It looks passable although my brows felt brittle when I was working the powder in.

What do you think, does the Nichido Acti Brow 24HR Eyebrow Marker look like something you'd try? Is it cheap enough that you don't mind fixing it a bit every time you use it?

One of our top requirements for makeup is longevity. Ain’t nobody got time to be retouching all day, especially in a hot and humid country like ours! Thankfully, gone are the days when we had to pay through the nose for makeup that can take us from the morning rush to evening drinks. Here are some of our drugstore finds with incredible wear at a price you can't say no to!

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara (P429 at department stores)

A fuller fringe never fails to make you look more awake. This tube gives you fluttery lashes that are beautifully fanned out with zero clumps - just check out how awesome they look on Liz! It’s best for girls who are blessed with naturally thick lashes (lucky you!), and just need some length without looking too heavy. Of course, we love how smudge and smear-proof it is too.

Deborah Milano Absolute Lasting Liquid Lipstick (P649at SM Beauty)

This looks exactly like the Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge Waterproof Lip Color! The packaging is exactly the same, and the formula feels EXACTLY the same too. Maybe Deborah Milano and MUFE uses the same factory? Anyway, this product is truly transfer proof and will barely budge even when you eat. It can be drying though, so make sure to prime your lips with balm before laying it on.

Happy Skin x Love Marie Shut Up & Kiss Me Moisturizing Matte Lip Liner (P499 at Happy Skin counters)

When Heart Evangelista released her collab with Happy Skin, we didn’t quite expect to fall so hard for her lip liners. This reminds us of Make Up For Ever Aqua Lip Pencils because it runs easily and smoothly across the lips, and aren't as drying as most lip liners. They stay on forever too! These lip liners are just the things to convert lipstick haters to regular users, though we still recommend prepping with a bit of balm for added moisture.

Pink Sugar x Project Vanity These Lips Don't Lie Matte Lip Crayon (P399 at our store, free shipping)

We specifically designed these matte lipsticks to be as long wearing as they are pretty. We've gotten raves about how these can last for hours, and don't cause lips to flake even so. <3 Woke Up Like This and Love At First Swipe are the crowd favorites, although we do love us some Ready In Five and Nothing To Wear just to buck the trend and go with brighter colors. Here are the complete swatches!

Maybelline Dream Velvet Soft Matte Foundation (P499 at department stores)

Liquid foundation can feel heavy and uncomfortable but this mousse formula gives great coverage without sacrificing the skin's comfort. It may look thick upon first glance but feels like nothing on the skin, and looks like it too even though it's a matte formula. The Soft matte has medium-buildable coverage that makes it a good pick for both your daily 8-5 and special events. Best of all, there are 12 shades available!

Nichido Acti Brow Tri-Tip 24Hr Eyebrow Marker (P238 at department stores)

If you’ve ever wanted to try the brow feathering trend, this is a cheap and noncommittal way to do it! It has a unique three-pronged tip that makes it super easy to draw individual hairs. The marker’s pigmentation can be intense, and once it sets, it's there until you wash it off. This comes in four different shades but make sure to try them on your brows first since they're not accurate when swatched. Here's how Honey Blonde and Auburn Brown look when worn! They're quite red.

Jordana Sweet Cream Matte Liquid Lip Color (~P300 at SM Beauty)

This is probably one of drugstore beauty’s best-kept secrets. It feels very wet and thin upon application but dries down to a lovely velvet matte finish. Once set, it doesn’t have any of that tacky feel that you’d get from most liquid lipsticks! It’s transfer-proof, and doesn’t crumble or fade even after a meal. The 20-shade collection has your usual pinks, corals, and reds plus more outlandish ones like black, gray, and navy blue!

Essence Little Eyebrow Monsters Eyebrow Lifter (P249 at SM Beauty)

For arches that look defined all day long, a brow highlighter can make all the difference! This creamy cool highlighter is super easy to apply, too -  just swipe it on and lightly pat to get a diffused look. Place it right underneath the brow bone to give your eye area a more lifted and refreshed look. This is also great as a lid color and a waterline liner, plus you can choose from a White or Rosy shade.

Essence I Love Colour Intensifying Eyeshadow Base (P249 at SM Beauty)

When your oiliness isn’t just on your T-zone but also gets on your lids, an eye makeup primer is non-negotiable to get your eyeshadow to stay intact and smudge-free. This eyeshadow base won’t just prolong wear time - it also makes the pigments look richer and more vibrant!

Essence Long-Lasting Eye Pencil (P150 at SM Beauty)

Here’s a PV favorite that we’ve featured several times because it’s just so good!  It's creamy, opaque, true-to-color, stays put for a good time, and is unbelievably cheap. There are also so many colors available: from fun shades like gold, silver, and blue to classic staples like black and brown!

Have you tried any of these fail-proof budget beauty picks? What do you rely on to keep your face on point for days when you’re too busy to retouch?
